OBJECTIVE:
The design objective was to re-purpose the St.James pump house located on James and waterfront drive to a hotel space. Through programming research, the area of the surrounding context offered many local places to drink and dine. Rather than competing with local restaurants, hotel Cinq taste lounge and eatery invites locals chefs working as a pop up kitchen being the main appeal drawing not only people who are visiting Winnipeg but also the local community. Hotel Cinq is a luxuriously charming boutique-style hotel that is designed for the city of Winnipeg to draw tourists who are interested in exploring the culture of Winnipeg through food and art. The space provides users with a place to eat, drink, meet and experience local food, wine and beer. The project is composed of a reception that serves as an entry way to the eatery and the lounge area within the existing pump house while the hotel rooms are located on the new building proposed located to the east of the pump house. The intention was to frame the pump house using glazing allowing for view points allowing the heritage of the St.ames pump house to be a focal point.
Based on the FIVE (cinq) senses; sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound. Sight, with the design focal point being the heritage pump house, providing a warm and welcome feel using warm color tones to complement the existing brickwork. Brass finishes with rich satin materials. Taste, attracting many local chefs, featuring new and unique food fusions. An attractive venue to host wine tasting events with the bar & lounge showcasing the local beer. Touch, with it’s inviting atmosphere it has attracted many aspiring artists to share their passion through their art pieces and music. The spacious guest rooms are beautifully furnished with the unique art. Smell and sound, with the long winters in Winnipeg, the hotel wanted to embrace the season by offering a unique fire lounge that will keep the guest nice and warm.
